Design and validation of a music technology course for initial music teacher education based on the TPACK Model and the Project-Based Learning approa…

2019

This project outlines a design for, and presents an evaluation and validation of, an information and communication technology (ICT) training course on an initial teacher education programme for pre-service music teachers at a Spanish University. The primary objective was to improve initial teacher education in music technology through a course design with two key components: (1) constructivist learning through collaborative projects (PBL) and (2) the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) integration framework. The course saw students carry out four real-life projects, three of which involved the elaboration of educational material through the exclusive use of musical technolog…

2020

In this paper, we outline a theoretical account of the relationship between technology and human musicality. An enactive and biocultural position is adopted that assumes a close coevolutionary relationship between the two. From this position, we aim at clarifying how the present and emerging technologies, becoming embedded and embodied in our lifeworld, inevitably co-constitute and transform musical practices, skills, and ways of making sense of music. Therefore, as a premise of our scrutiny, we take it as a necessity to more deeply understand the ways that humans become affiliated to the ever-changing instruments of music technology, in order to better understand the coevolutionary impact …

Guest Editors' Introduction: Music as Embodied Experience

2020

Technology has impacted music’s role in contemporary society in extraordinary ways. In addition to how people use music for professional and artistic pursuits, technology has opened a wide variety of new avenues for research and application, particularly as a reliable therapeutic and salutogenic tool. Recently, a useful framework for studying this shifting perspective surrounding musical experience has emerged: embodied music cognition, which conceptualizes the body as being at the center of music experiences. The papers in this thematic issue highlight how music technologies have matured to the point where they affect the way music is created, performed, enjoyed, and researched.

Collaborative Musical Creativity between Students and Adults: The Sonorous Paella

2021

While creativity is a key element of contemporary curriculum frameworks around the world, it is still insufficiently fostered in formal education settings. This study analyzes a project for collaborative musical creativity, entitled The Sonorous Paella. Participants (N = 12) were eight Year 4 secondary students, two professional musicians, an artist-in-residence, and a music teacher. Drawing on a graphic musical score, the participants worked together for 1.5 months to produce a group composition and performance. They were provided with various sound producers (instruments, everyday objects, technological devices) and were encouraged to flexibly utilize the physical space to maximize collab…

Music making software programs for children from ages five to twelve

2010

This research classifies the qualities in the existing music creation software programs that enable them to be operated by young users. This is done through comparison of the literature on musical development of children and the examination of the existing software. For the research were selected three fundamentally different pieces of music creation software that potentially provide a wide variety of features. The selected programs are GarageBand, Songsmith and Groovy Music. Each of the three programs has its own strengths in benefiting children s musical development in different ages. What all programs share is the ease of use and a clear interface. Icons of the functions help navigating …

Progress in Using an Electronic Playing Environment. A Comparative Study between Cantors and Primary Teacher Students Specialising in Music

2012

Abstract This research was executed as self-study research in a music technology learning environment designed for teacher education. It explored the functionality of music technology teaching from the viewpoints of technical, physical, and social learning environments. Moreover, connecting music theory teaching to a notation programme was studied. The target group consisted of primary teacher students, and the control group were parish cantors. The participants kept a study log and answered questions related to the teaching and subject content. These data were analysed with qualitative analysis. Group differences were examined with Mann-Whitney's U-test. Both the beginners and experts had …

Diseño y Evaluación de un programa informático para la educación musical de maestros no especialistas. El caso de EMOLAB.

2016

This article shows the design, development and evaluation of a software for teaching support in a music training course for pre-service non music teachers. The aim of EMOLab has been addressing to both production and perception musical activities. The assessment of software was done by freshmen enrolled in Elementary Education Teacher Training degree. They completed a questionnaire that collected their opinions (versatility, efficiency, ease of use, quality of graphical environment, adequacy, interest, facilitating learning, feedback, functionality) and perceptions on more general aspects (control, guidance, affection, consultation, verification, tracing). The data suggest that students per…
